Here is the latest ISW assessment for 1 May 2022.
The bulk of the fighting remains centered around Donbass, Mariupol and Kershon, and there is some lingering Russian presence around Kharkiv. A Ukrainian rocket strike against a Russian HQ near Izyum (near Donbass) scored another headshot killing the the head of Russia’s cyber warfare troops and the Chief of Staff of the VDV. Supposedly, the Chief of the Russian General Staff, General Gerasimov was touring the area but left prior to the attack.
Entering into the third month of the world’s first Fifth Generation war is revealing some interesting things about the future of Fifth Gen conflicts. Fifth Gen war will be fought with the best Third Gen weapons money can buy.
In this update, we’re going to delve further into the Finnish-Swede NATO membership question, the economies of war, and the Western systems now making their way into Ukrainian formations.
NATO-Russia Land Border
We’ve kept an eye on this for a few weeks, but now, Finnish and Swedish NATO membership seems just around the corner. This is no longer speculation or wishful thinking on NATO’s part either. The time table is accelerating and Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary-General, essentially indicated rapid approval once the applications are formally received.
Having worked in NATO, I can tell you that it is a slow, lumbering beast that doesn’t do anything quickly… until it does. Getting 30 nations to agree on anything substantial is difficult at best. However, when their minds are made up, and understand that all “yes” votes in NATO have to have unanimous consensus, things move fast.
Even the pro-Putin Hungarian government plans to approve NATO membership for Finland and Sweden. That ground shaking…
